Many of the deaths and injuries were not in the set piece battles but in skirmishes and general brutish behaviour. She does not write much on "the battles", rather she sets out as you describe, a catastrophic set of events down to the personal level. I am current re-reading one of the best books, The English Civil War: A People’s History by Diane Purkiss. ![]() There is a lot published about the Wars of the Three Kingdoms but some still use the term English Civil War, even academics. The human cost over that time was nothing short of catastrophic. Extending from 1639 to 1653 they later became known for historians convenience as the Wars of the Three Kingdoms. “English” civil war is also a misnomer, it was actually a series of British and Irish civil wars, with separate but linked campaigns in England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland over quite a lengthy period. ![]()
